Support Postal Workers reinstalling letter-sorting machines!

The International Marxist-Humanist Organization

Postal workers in Dallas, Texas, Tacoma and Wenatchee, Washington have reinstalled letter-sorting machines that have been dismantled over the past few months. As an organization we encourage civil society in the US, and national and international unions, to actively support the Postal Workers and their attempts to secure a democratic result in the upcoming Presidential Election.

In July 2020 Trump installed a new Postmaster General: Louis DeJoy. The postmaster is a strong supporter of Trump both economically and politically. After DeJoy took up his new position he ordered an acceleration of the downsizing of the postal system. According to Philip Rubio, a former postal worker and now professor, DeJoy has been amazingly effective in his goal to downsize the Postal Service and to support the privatization of this public institution. During DeJoy’s two months in office his goals have included the replacement of 23 senior management positions, cutting overtime and banning late leaving from mail processing plants and from stations. Added to that, DeJoy oversaw the removal of thousands of blue mail collection boxes and the decommissioning of these mail sorting machines.

Lisa Graves/True North Research for In the Public Interest reports that the attacks on the Postal Service, as an institution, already started in the 1970s. Among the strongest supporters of the privatization of America’s most essential public services has been the billionaire Charles Koch. These privatization attacks are now endangering the jobs of hundreds of thousands of public servants who are disproportionately people of color.

IMHO regards the present attacks on the Postal system from DeJoy as primarily an attempt to sabotage the mail-voting system for the upcoming Presidential Election. An attack that President Trump has openly supported. We encourage both civil society in the US, unions, and international unions, to actively resist these attacks on the postal system in the US and on the thousands of postal workers who are not able to do their job properly.
