The Trump phenomenon has revived debate over the issue of fascism, but effectively resisting such a possibility involves serious theoretical analysis.  This meeting will begin with Hamid Assian’s presentation detailing the escalating attacks on racial minorities, women, immigrants, Muslims, and the environment, and the growing movement against these outrageous developments. Then Kevin Anderson will explore Marxist and Marxist-Humanist theories of the nature and causes of fascism, from the 1920s through today.  Fascism as a form of state-capitalism that arose out of the Great Depression of the 1930s will be viewed in the context of today’s persistent economic stagnation and reactionary politics, whether in the form of neofascism or of rightwing populism.  How do the domestic politics of “America first” and rightwing populism relate to the economic crisis of 2008, to its consequences for working people, and to global imperialism? In short, what is the economic and social basis for the turn away from at least some aspects of neoliberalism? Where does this leave the quest for an emancipatory alternative, not only to neoliberalism, but also to capitalism itself?
