Summary: Written the day after, focusing on the social forces – and not — on which to build the resistance — Editors
I want to get out ahead of all the upcoming inevitable attempts to whitewash the bigotry, narcissism, and fascism that is the core of the support of Trump.
The Cryptocurrency industry spent $40 million dollars to buy themselves a Senate seat in Ohio & take out Sherrod Brown, the chair of the Senate Banking Committee Chairman. He is one of the most pro-labor US senators. He’s long opposed unpopular free trade deals. A majority of voters in Ohio voted for a guy worth over $100 million dollars to the Senate, Bernie Moreno.
Some will try to have us believe that the rebellious “White working class” was sending a message by voting for the Crypto guy. I beg to differ. If you read about the stuff he campaigned on, it was just all classic fascist baiting cultural war stuff from mean liberals to immigration being bad.

71+ million Americans gladly signed on to Trump after being warned quite clearly for 8 years what he will do. But as we knew, the US electoral system is fatally flawed. That said Trump won only between 50-51% of vote in the swing states so far.
Because of California’s mail in ballot system there are still millions of votes left to count there. But when California gets counted it looks like 9 million more people didn’t vote for the Democratic candidate in 2024 compared to 2020.
It hasn’t been said enough but members of the working class who voted for Trump this election are class traitors. We should waste little time trying to win them over. Our work in fighting back against fascism lies in mobilizing ourselves and the millions of demoralized working-class Americans who sat this one out or who are not very engaged in politics.
Anyhow it is clear that the US is fundamentally split down the middle between 2 visions –those who value freedom, democracy, multiracial diversity, education, coexistence, equality, and those who believe in domination, patriarchy, xenophobia and group narcissism as psychologist Erich Fromm coined it. Psychological research over decades has consistently shown that 1/3 to 40% of Americans want a fascist leader in charge.
As for the Palestine issue, the Democratic Party leadership calculated they couldn’t afford to lose older White Zionists, particularly in Pennsylvania. Well, they did not come to the rescue. We don’t know how a more antiwar stance from Kamala Harris would have played in the other swing states, but it certainly would have helped a lot in Michigan. Understandably a large portion of Arab and Muslims there boycotted voting for Harris. Over 300,000 Arab-Americans live in Michigan.
Lastly, 14% of voters in Florida voted for both an abortion rights ballot initiative and Trump. In Arizona, 10% voted to legalize abortion and also voted for Trump. There isn’t any obvious way to reach these voters with high levels of contradictory beliefs in my opinion. (61% of Arizonans voted for legal abortion. Florida unfortunately did not legalize abortion because Republicans made the threshold for the ballot measure 60% to pass. 57% voted to legalize abortion.)
Americans let’s enjoy our last 3 months of relative peace because there will be a long fight ahead.
Two books I will be reading in coming weeks are Erich Fromm’s “Escape from Freedom” and a book I happened to come across upon at the library: “Why we Elect Narcissists and Sociopaths and How to Stop It”.
Never give up the fight against fascism. Hasta la victoria siempre!
