Bread Concern, from Tehran to Gaza

Hamid Vahed

Summary: Poem that portrays the harsh realities faced by children in Tehran and Gaza. — Editors

Crossroads in Tehran
This crowded and polluted city
Working children wait for a red light
To clean a car window
Baluchi student runs 12 kilometers barefoot
So that maybe a shoe will win a prize
A Palestinian girl in Gaza carries her wounded little sister on her shoulders
Other Children in Gaza
Among the ruins left by the Israeli bombardment
In Search of Bread
The roar of Israeli bombers no longer scares Gaza’s children
Because there is no roof left to collapse
Now the main concern of the children of Gaza is bread
Just like child laborers in the streets of Tehran

A haunting poem. And so evocative of so much else of the world.

    Thank you!
