2023 marks the anniversary of two crucially important books in Marxist dialectics. It is 100 years since the publication of Georg Lukacs’s History and Class Consciousness (1923), a pioneering work that opened up new vistas in the wake of the Russian revolution of 1917 as it took up both dialectical philosophy and proletarian consciousness, plus a critique of mechanical materialism and positivism. It is 50 years since Raya Dunayevskaya’s Philosophy and Revolution appeared in 1973, a book that considered dialectics from the heights of the Hegel’s absolutes down to the gritty reality of the 1960s struggles of rank-and-file workers, women, youth, and Black people across the world, with particular attention to Africa.
