[Los Angeles] Pushing Back Against Demonization of Minoritized Populations in the U.S. and India

Pushing Back against the Demonization of Minoritized Populations in the U.S. and India: What Lessons for the Intersectional Struggle for a Humanist Alternative to Capitalism?

The U.S. and India are often touted as the world’s two largest democracies. And in both countries, the struggles of labor, women, LGBTQ people, and racial/religious minorities have attained new levels of mobilization in recent years. At the same time, however, organized neofascist forces, often holding state power, are increasingly fanning the flames of racism, misogyny, and religious bigotry. In a deeply divided U.S., near-daily racist violence is targeting Black people and immigrants, at a time when rightwing forces are also waging a culture war against even modest attempts in the schools to probe gender/sexuality or the real history of slavery and systemic racism. In India, a neofascist national government, which holds almost all the levers of political power, has been orchestrating both physical and legal attacks on religious and ethnic minorities, all in the name of a reactionary politicization of religion. What lessons can be learned from the U.S. and India for the struggle for a humanist alternative to capitalism?
