Marx’s Critique of the Gotha Program is a revelation. It offers the fullest elaboration of his vision for a communist future, free from the shackles of capital, but also the state. Neglected by the statist versions of socialism, whether Social Democratic or Stalinist that left a wreckage of coercion and disillusionment in their wake, this new annotated translation of Marx’s Critique makes clear for the first time the full emancipatory scope of Marx’s notion of life after capitalism. An erudite new introduction by Peter Hudis plumbs the depth of Marx’s argument, elucidating how his vision of communism, and the transition to it, was thoroughly democratic. At a time when the rule of capital is being questioned and challenged, this volume makes an essential contribution to a real alternative to capitalism, rather than piecemeal reforms. In the twenty-first century, when it has never been more needed, here is Marx at his most liberatory.

Peter Hudis is Professor of Humanities and Philosophy at Oakton College (Illinois) and author of Marx’s Concept of the Alternative to Capitalism (Brill, 2012) and Frantz Fanon: Philosopher of the Barricades (Pluto Press, 2015), and has published in numerous journals on issued related to International Politics, Latin American Social Movements, Philosophical Reflections on Race and Racism, and Contemporary Political and Social Philosophy. He co-edited (with Kevin B. Anderson) The Power of Negativity: Selected Writings on the Dialectic in Hegel and Marx, by Raya Dunayevskaya and The Rosa Luxemburg Reader, as well as The Letters of Rosa Luxemburg (with Annelies Laschitza and George Adler). He currently serves as General Editor of The Complete Works of Luxemburg, a forthcoming 17-volume collection; as part of this, he edited Volume I of The Complete Works, Economic Writings 1, co-edited Volume II, Economic Writings 2 (with Paul Le Blanc), as well as Volume III, Political Writings I, 1897-1905 (with Axel Fair-Schulz and William A. Pelz) and Volume IV, Political Writings 1906-1909 (with Sandra Rein). He is a Member of the International Marxist-Humanist Organization..

Kevin B. Anderson is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, with courtesy appointments in Feminist Studies and Political Science. He is the author of Lenin, Hegel, and Western Marxism (1995), Foucault and the Iranian Revolution (with Janet Afary, 2005), and Marx at the Margins (2010/2016). Among his edited volumes are the Rosa Luxemburg Reader (with Peter Hudis, 2004) and the Dunayevskaya-Marcuse-Fromm Correspondence (with Russell Rockwell, 2012). He writes regularly for New Politics, The International Marxist-Humanist, and Jacobin on Marxism and on international politics and radical movements in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
