The U.S.’s bloody exit from Afghanistan is the culmination of a 20-year disastrous invasion and occupation in which the U.S. poured immense resources into a kleptocratic Afghan government and military, all of which collapsed like a house of cards shortly after Biden began to implement his troop withdrawal. What can those opposed to imperialism and the religious fundamentalism of the Taliban — and subimperialist powers like Pakistan and Iran, as well as Russia and China — do to support Afghans who oppose all of these reactionary tendencies? As Fariha, a feminist activist in Kabul recently stated, “We cannot breathe if we are deprived of our rights to education and work, and if we are not present in our society.” What does all this mean for the U.S., after decades of war and under an internal fascist threat today? And for the struggle for refugee
protection?
