The world finds itself embroiled in a housing crisis as rent and property prices trend upward with no end in sight. This is felt no less in Los Angeles where the state aids property developers in a two-pronged approach. The first prong is to use the rule of law to justify the forced displacement of residents, and the second prong is to increase police violence on those residents who would resist. While texts like Engels’s 1872 THE HOUSING QUESTION show this problem is as old as capitalism, we are faced today with its latest transformation. From theoretical roots to concrete organizing, we will examine housing and its role in a revolutionary future where capitalism and the state are abolished.
