[Chicago] Session 1: Why Hegel, Why Now? The Ceaseless Movement of Ideas and History.
Summer reading group on Philosophy and Revolution from Hegel and Marx to today.
Suggested Reading: Philosophy and Revolution (pp. 3-10), Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit, “Sense Certainty” (Pinkard translation, pp. 60-68).
Is a successful transformation of society possible without revolutionary theory? Which theories or philosophies can provide direction for overcoming capitalism? We will explore these questions by focusing on the Hegelian roots of Marx’s thought and its implications for today’s freedom struggles. We will read excerpts from Raya Dunayevskaya’s book Philosophy and Revolution, supplemented by selected readings by Hegel, Marx, and contemporary radical thinkers.
