SPEAKER: Frieda Afary, with a comment by Mansoor M. on the refugee crisis

In yet another outrage in a war that has killed over 500,000 civilians, the Syrian city of Aleppo is being reduced to ashes by a merciless aerial bombardment and a siege that has cut off water and food to hundreds of thousands of civilians.  Syrian and Russian planes and their Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah allies are carrying out these attacks. Russia even bombed a UN relief convoy.  The indifference of the outside world is palpable as another Sarajevo is taking place before our very eyes. While it is true that the Syrian revolution has lost some of its democratic character since 2011, and is itself riven with deep contradictions, it is truly shocking to see some on the global left actually supporting the Syria-Russia-Iran alliance, while others remain indifferent or silent.  Meanwhile, the US, Russia, Western Europe, Turkey, and the despots of the Middle East all seem bent upon forcing some version of the Assad regime upon the Syrian people, in order to “stabilize” the region and to cut off the flow of refugees.  This human tragedy demands a socialist response that is both humanist and opposed to all forms of imperialism.

Frieda Afary is the Producer of Iranian Progressives in Translation and a member of the Alliance of Syrian and Iranian Socialists.

Mansoor M. is an Iranian cultural worker and a member of the International Marxist-Humanist Organization.
