SPEAKERS: Mansoor M.

Our time is one of extremes. The Trump campaign continues to attack Latin@s, women, Muslims, and anyone who might protest his candidacy. At the same time, the Black Lives Matter movement and the Sanders campaign have given focus to a new generation of radical youth. The likes of Bernie Sanders and Britain’s Jeremy Corbyn are, however, repeating old illusions about the viability of a reformed capitalism, even though such reforms have come to naught recently, as seen in Latin America. The global economic morass appears to have no end in sight, while a swing toward counter-revolution has taken hold of the Middle East. Massive migration to escape that region has become a focus of rightwing, anti-immigrant demagogues in Europe.  At the same time, the environmental crisis has only deepened despite the COP21 in Paris.  For these reasons, the theme of the IMHO Convention this summer will be “How to Transcend Capitalism? Rethinking the Relationship of Race, Class, and Gender in an Era of Economic Crisis and Environmental Destruction.”
