[London] Anti-Racism and Marxism, Past and Present – Sources of Inspiration for Future Struggles

One of the most important questions for today’s left-wing movements concerns the character of the relationship between the struggle for liberation of people of color and the socialist movement’s struggle for the overcoming of capitalism. For too long, these have been thought of as separate struggles or, at worst, even regarded as distractions from each other. As Marxist-Humanists, we believe that anti-racist and anti-capitalist struggles are related as part of ‘the dialectics of liberation’, while at the same time each never reducing to the other. At this meeting, we will revisit, analyse, and discuss a number of somewhat neglected contributions on the issue of the relationship between racism and capitalism, and seek to work out some initial steps for developing a class conscious anti-racist mass movement.

Nigel will speak on Claudia Jones. The title of his presentation will be ‘A Peoples’ Art is the Genesis of their Freedom’: The Political Legacy of Claudia Jones, Black Radical Tradition and Anti-Racist Activism in the UK.

Jonas will speak on the Johnson-Forest tendency, which consisted of C.L.R. James, Raya Dunayevskaya, and Grace Lee Boggs. The JFT wrote on race and class from a unique perspective which they developed from an original reading of Hegel, Marx, and Lenin.

After the two presentations, which will be approximately 15 min each, there will be time for discussion.
