Sunday, January 17, 2016
7:30-9:30 PM

Westside Peace Center
3916 Sepulveda Blvd., near Venice Blvd. (free parking in rear)
Suite 101-102, press #22 at door to get into building
Culver City (LA area)

SPEAKERS:

  • Mark Morris, Porter Ranch gas leak & Los Angeles area activist
  • Hamid Assian, environmental and anti-racist activist
  • Marcelo Mendez, student activist
  • Cristina Awadalla, feminist ecologist

This meeting will interrogate capitalism’s anti-ecological nature, as seen most recently in the Porter Ranch gas leak. We will underline the fact that capitalism has done more in its short life to destroy the environment than all of the other historical modes of production combined. (1) We will critique mainstream environmentalism from an anti-capitalist perspective, both in terms of its actions and its theories of society. (2) We will explore critically some of the more radical perspectives on climate change and averting disaster, both Marxist and feminist. (3) We will examine the COP21 Paris Accord from a radical climate justice perspective, particularly the choice to omit gender equality from the operative language and its very limited result, which leaves the planet in grave danger.
