[Delhi] The New Edition of Marx’s “Critique of the Gotha Program” in Light of the Crises Facing Us Today
India is currently at a pivotal moment in its history, where the nation’s future, shaped by a long tradition of secular, democratic, and social justice-oriented movements, appears uncertain due to the neo-fascist political approach adopted by the BJP. The rise of the BJP under Narendra Modi has significantly impacted the country’s social fabric, leading to increased marginalization of various disadvantaged groups, including Dalits, Muslims, women, and the working class. This critical situation in India has broader implications for South Asia, where the socio-political climate in India influences the political crises in neighboring countries.
To analyse fully these complex contemporary issues, a firm grasp of the underlying capitalist system and the possibility of an alternative are crucial. To this end, this meeting will explore the relevance of Karl Marx’s “Critique of the Gotha Program” and discuss the importance of the intersectional Marxist perspective advocated by Raya Dunayevskaya. The new PM Press edition of Marx’s Critique translates key passages more accurately, while Hudis’s introduction plumbs Marx’s vision of the communist future in ways that illuminate his critique of capitalism in new ways.
