Chicago The Green New Deal: Realistic Proposal or Fantasy?

Leading the discussion: Peter Hudis, author of Marx’s Concept of the Alternative to Capitalism.

The Green New Deal (GND), drawn up by U.S. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes and Ed Markey, is the most ambitious and comprehensive program to deal with climate change ever made in Congress. It calls for dramatic changes to end our reliance on fossil fuels that are warming the planet at an alarming rate. It is also proposes a national, industrial, and economic mobilization to eliminate poverty in the U.S. and to make prosperity, wealth and economic security available to everyone participating in the transformation. The GND is also framed as solution provided by the state to steer markets toward sustainability. But is fundamental change possible in a growth-driven economy?

Discussion will focus on the current climate change movement as well as the International Marxist-Humanist Organization Journal article by the same title. See IMHOJournal.org.
