This meeting will take up electoral politics from a Marxist and Marxist-Humanist vantage point. The 2024 US elections heightened the global crisis and had huge implications for the left, people of color, and the lgbtq community; now the US midterms and the Brazilian presidential elections are rapidly approaching, while the right seems ascendant in Europe, especially in Germany, and in South America, among other regions. In this moment it is critical that the radical left understand the importance of elections, the limitations of electoral politics, and what is to be done in the face of reactionary electoral success. Speakers Maria Cristina Longo and GF Carvalho Neto will examine the electoral situation in Brazil, where Trump has previously attempted to interfere on behalf of the disgraced right-winger Jair Bolsonaro. Rocio Lopez and Tim Casement will then discuss the upcoming U.S. Midterm elections — and the primaries that preceded them — and their potential implications for local and global politics.

Speakers:
Maria Cristina Longo, Brazilian Marxist feminist philosopher

GF Carvalho Neto, Brazilian student of psychology and activist

Rocio Lopez, LA-based socialist feminist

Tim Casement, CA-based student of Marxism and critical theory

Sponsored by California Chapter, International Marxist-Humanist Organization
