Italian philosopher Domenico Losurdo’s 2024 book on ‘Western Marxism’ rejects some of the most creative Marxist thinkers of the last century, among them key members of the Frankfurt School, as tools of imperialism and colonialism. At the same time, Losurdo espouses a neo-Stalinist and Maoist version of Marxism, above all identifying the construction of socialism with the state. This meeting will offer a critique of the critique.

Speakers:

Douglas Kellner, UCLA, author of Herbert Marcuse and the Crisis of Marxism and other books

Paul Kim, philosopher and student activist

Jackson Aquino, LA-based activist in anti-ICE and Palestine protests and writer on these and on critical and urban theory

Suggested readings:

Kellner’s review for Logos, attached separately

Sponsored by Los Angeles Chapter, International Marxist-Humanist Organization
