SPEAKERS: Kevin Anderson and Ali Kiani

This meeting will preview several of the presentations to be made at the IMHO Convention this summer, whose overall theme will be “How to Transcend Capitalism? Rethinking the Relationship of Race, Class, and Gender in an Era of Economic Crisis and Environmental Destruction.” Kevin Anderson will take up revolution and counter-revolution in the Middle East, China, and Europe in light of the Marxist dialectic of race, class, and colonialism. Ali Kiani will discuss recent events in the Middle East with particular focus on Iran, US policy toward ISIS, and the Kurdish movement, with a focus on alternatives to capitalism.

Kevin Anderson teaches at UC-Santa Barbara. He is a longtime Marxist-Humanist and the author of MARX AT THE MARGINS and of LENIN, HEGEL, AND WESTERN MARXISM, and the coeditor of the ROSA LUXEMBURG READER and of THE POWER OF NEGATIVITY by Raya Dunayevskaya.

Ali Kiani is a longtime Iranian Marxist who was active in the workers’ councils during the 1979 revolution, and since then in the LA area.  He has translated several Marxist texts into Persian.
