[We will begin the meeting with a brief conversation on the ongoing ramifications of the US election and the growing war in the Middle East.]

At a time of deep crisis for society and for the left, delving into the dialectical foundations of Marxism is of particular importance in helping us to rethink and regroup. Lenin’s philosophical exploration of Marxism’s theoretical foundations paved the way for a renewed engagement with Hegel’s thought. Naturally, various philosophical disciplines and schools of thought offer different responses to this inquiry. We will focus on how Marxism approaches this question. Specifically, we are interested in examining how the Marxist response, which is developed on a dialectical foundation, becomes increasingly comprehensive and can challenge a prevalent myth closely tied to Hegelian terminology. This myth, which most of us have encountered in some form and which continues to proliferate, reduces Hegelian dialectics to the simplistic formula of “thesis-antithesis-synthesis.” Overcoming this distortion helps illuminate the truly revolutionary character of Hegel’s dialectic of absolute negativity.
