Erich Fromm, born in 1900, was one of the twentieth century’s foremost public intellectuals of the left. In 1961, he published a widely circulated edition of Marx’s 1844 Manuscripts, helping to place those humanist writings at the center of Marx’s thought. Soon after, his Socialist Humanism pushed the argument further. An early member of the “Frankfurt School” before going his own way, Fromm carried out a pioneering Freudian-Marxist analysis of the authoritarian character based upon social research in pre-Hitler Germany. His Escape from Freedom (1941) continues to influence our analysis of the petty bourgeoisie (lower middle class) as major part of the social base of fascist movements. In these and other ways, Fromm continues to speak to us today.
