Trump Meets Intense Resistance as He Lawlessly Sends National Guard to LA in Anti-Immigrant Crackdown
Summary: LA’s grassroots resistance to Trump and ICE has only grown in the face of increasing repression — Editors
As you may have heard Trump has outrageously ordered 2000 National Guard to Los Angeles after there were protests against ICE raids this weekend. This afternoon, the police teargassed protesters in downtown LA. One of our members was at that protest today. Yesterday at lunch time the federal police teargassed protesters in Paramount. Obviously, the propaganda that there is lots of violence from protesters is a lie.

Around 5 protesters have been arrested in the last 2 days. What kind of alleged insurrection is that? It’s a completely bogus setup.
One of the people arrested on Friday was the president of a union. David Huerta, the (Latino) president of SEIU California, was arrested and thrown to the ground face first. It is hard to imagine this was anything other than a targeted arrest. He has yet to be released!
Additionally multiple Latino & Black Congresspeople have been denied access to the federal detention center even though they have a clear legal right to inspect the detention center. 2 congresspeople yesterday said that teargas was launched in that area despite authorities being well aware that Congresspeople were in that area.
In videos from Saturday in Paramount, a Latino suburb, you can see protesters pushing shopping carts from the local hardware store, Home Depot, to form a defense against militarized police with teargas. ICE has raided multiple Home Depot’s where day laborers gather to get work. Shopping carts versus assault weapons and teargas!
“What really happened outside the Paramount Home Depot? The reality on the ground vs. the rhetoric”
The Trump regime had been escalating attacks in cities around the country the last month, trying to provoke riots as an excuse to send in the military.
Last week ICE raided a restaurant in a trendy neighborhood in San Diego, California and a crowd protested masked militarized police rolling up with assault weapons & machine guns to detain workers. They also showed up to a neighborhood in Minneapolis which saw the George Floyd protests in 2020 with the same over the top militarized police.
A month ago, Trump had the Ras Baraka, the Black mayor of Newark, New Jersey arrested when he inspected an immigrant detention center along with 2 Black members of Congress. The Trump regime has also filed criminal charges against one of these Black congresswomen, falsely accusing her of assaulting ICE agents.
Notably, Trump has only arrested and manhandled Black & Latino politicians thus far.
Recall that Trump wanted to shoot Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020 but the then Secretary of Defense stopped him. Now he has a rapist Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, and they are itching to find ways to brutalize protesters.
As for the larger picture, this is an unprecedented moment. Trump has sent these soldiers against our Governor’s wishes in complete violation of the US constitution. (Our Congresspeople, and local politicians have also all condemned this.)
The National Guard is under the control of a state’s governor and is only supposed to be deployed with a governor’s permission. The only exception is for an invasion or insurrection. (Let us not forget that Trump refused to allow DC to send the National Guard for hours during the January 6th insurrection!)
The last time the Federal government deployed the National Guard without state permission was in the 1960s to protect Black students integrating Southern schools.
The only other times the National Guard has been to Los Angeles to quell rebellion during my lifetime were during the 2020 protests and the 1992 LA rebellion.
It is not terribly surprising that Trump decided to start his campaign of military intimidation in Los Angeles, as we are a heavily Latino, and a majority people of color city.
However, Trump wildly underestimates our political and economic power due to his racism.
A few days ago, before these ICE raids, California’s Governor threatened to withhold California’s taxes from the federal government after a Trump threat to defund us. California is the 4th largest economy in the world.
There are multiple protests planned throughout the city the next few days and we will keep you posted on the situation.

If what Trump did the day after coming into office with his mass pardoning of the January 6th fascist insurrectionists could be considered a growling and snarling at the at the democracy fought for by the people of this nation, then what has been happening in Los Angeles over this past week has been nothing less than a full-blown assault on that very democracy. Trump has been in office for almost five months and has created more havoc both domestically and internationally than he did during his first term. What the demonstrator of Los Angeles have shown, among other things, is that Trump’s campaign of revenge and retribution is now in full swing. Let’s be clear: Trump’s path to absolute power is not assured; resistance to his cuts to the full array of domestic federal spending that benefit all people is deepening and intensifying daily; rail and longshore workers, who’s contract come due within the next year or so, are not likely to tolerate another betrayal, such as they did with Biden.
Let’s be clear: Trump has declared all-out war on all but his rich crony friends. He knows he has to stay in power in order to stay out of jail. Trump is truly a desperate man, and he must be stopped before he goes too far and destroys everything humanity has ever worked for.
My thanks to my friend and comrades, Rocio Lopez, for her courageous reporting on the scene in Los Angeles.
